monetization.wtf/about

Monetization.wtf is WHAT TO FIX’s go-to resource to investigate how social media platforms redistribute revenue to their users.

With billions of dollars flowing through social media, understanding who gets paid by platforms, how much, and for what, is crucial to making sure that social media companies:
✔️ Compensate authentic content creation (including media content) fairly
❌ Don’t incentivize — and finance — harmful and illegal activity
❌ Don’t sell unsuitable ad placements to advertisers

Platforms aren’t exactly volunteering information on their monetization activities and governance. So we set out to consolidate what we could.

Monetization Tracker

We keep track of key platforms’ approach to monetization governance so that you can easily access, explore and compare:
  • existing disclosures
  • monetization terms and policies
  • program eligibility requirements
  • critical reporting

Meta Monetization Archive

Meta is the only company releasing lists of its active partner-publishers. We’ve spent the last 6 years backing that data up to enable you to:
  • check the monetization history of any account
  • run your own investigations
  • extract data for off-platform analysis
Read about the Meta Monetization Archive and its underlying data.

We think every platform should be required to maintain a monetization archive - and that these archives could be expanded to include information regarding payments.
You can help us make that case by sharing what you find and attributing the data to the WHAT TO FIX Meta Monetization Archive.
